Key to Staying Motivated: Not Relying on Others to Change in Order to Make You Happy

People often come to me with this scenario…

If only this person would (fill in the blank).

or

I only wish this person would (fill in the blank).

This is a fundamental flaw in thinking that has left a lot of people very unhappy for the their entire lives.

The only person who is responsible for your life and your happiness is… YOU!

That’s it!

As a rule people don’t change… unless they feel it necessary for them to change based on their own decision.

I don’t know who said it but I have always liked this quote and it has helped in dealing with people and it goes, “Those convinced against their will, is of the same opinion still.”

When you are looking to have someone else change in order for you to be happy, you are relinquishing a lot of power to those people and if those people find out about this, they can make your life a living hell. And some people will do this on purpose because they know that it pushes your buttons.

The truth be told… You shouldn’t leave your happiness based on anyone changing. Only you should be responsible for your happiness.

Here are a few actions points to consider for your happiness:

1. Get a clear picture of what you want your life to be like – Some of this is like a broken record, if you have read this blog for any length of time. But you have to be clear about what you you want your life to be like in all areas including career/business, family, financial, spiritual and fitness. Write this down on paper, be specific, make it time bound and get busy on the actions that will take you there.

2. What steps or action do YOU have to do to make that picture a reality – This is very important. Not what things do others have to do but what do YOU have to do in order to make this happen.

You may be saying to yourself, “John, that sounds great but what about the people around me?” This is a very interesting question because we have been dealing with the same people for a long time. We have co-workers, family members, children, husbands and wives and so forth. And here is my answer…

When you start to be clear about what you want in your life and start to take direct action towards what it is that you are looking for, the world around you will change. Some people may resist your wanting to change your life but those who truly want for your best interest will end up supporting your efforts and even come to your aid when they know you are serious.

Don’t forget these people have seen you buy twenty time planners that are now laying on the closet floor. They walk by the exercise equipment with clothes hanging from them that you bought when you were going to get in shape the last three or four times but because you threw in the towel and never followed through on what you were going to do last time… Well you get the picture!

When you get serious about the clear picture in your life and make the necessary changes in YOUR life to make yourself happier, you’ll be much happier with those around you.

Stay on point and stay persistent!

As Always, Here’s to Your LifetoSuccess,

John Clark
