Explain the source and timing of major assumptions. Keep historical results separate from projected figures.<\/p>\n<h2>Understand three connected statements<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Income statement:<\/strong> Shows revenue, expenses, and profit or loss over a period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cash-flow statement:<\/strong> Shows money entering and leaving the business over a period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Balance sheet:<\/strong> Shows assets, liabilities, and equity at a particular date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These statements are connected, but they are not interchangeable. A profitable sale can appear before the customer pays, so profit and available cash can differ.<\/p>\n<h2>Check timing and uncertainty<\/h2>\n<p>Consider when customers pay, when suppliers need payment, and when equipment or other commitments require cash. Test a lower-sales or higher-cost scenario to see how the plan changes.<\/p>\n<p>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/legacy.sba.gov\/business-guide\/plan-your-business\/write-your-business-plan\">SBA\u2019s financial-projection guidance<\/a> as a starting point. Ask an appropriately qualified accountant to help with accounting questions and important funding decisions.<\/p>\n<h2>Review against actual results<\/h2>\n<p>Schedule regular comparisons between the forecast and what happened. Investigate differences and update assumptions transparently.
