Be Safe With Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy safety begins with recognizing that essential oils are concentrated products. “Natural” does not mean harmless, and no general rule makes every oil suitable for every person or method of use.

Make aromatherapy safety part of the choice

Read the complete label and use the product only as intended. Do not assume lavender or tea tree oil is automatically safe to apply undiluted. A small skin test cannot guarantee that a later reaction will not occur.

Poison Control’s essential-oil guidance explains that misuse can cause irritation or poisoning. Do not swallow household essential oils or use them as improvised medicines.

Use and store products thoughtfully

  • Keep products in their original, labeled containers.
  • Store oils and diffuser liquids securely away from children and pets.
  • Follow product-specific directions rather than a generic number of drops.
  • Keep oils away from eyes and damaged skin.
  • Respect fragrance sensitivities in shared rooms.

Ask about your circumstances

Seek qualified guidance before using products around pregnancy, children, respiratory conditions, seizure disorders, or other health concerns. Product choice and method of use matter; a general article cannot assess individual suitability.

Respond to a problem promptly

Stop using a product if it causes irritation or discomfort. Seek appropriate medical or poison-control advice for accidental exposure or a reaction. Difficulty breathing is an emergency.

For product-safety context, see the FDA’s aromatherapy information. A fragrance routine should be optional and informed, with no pressure to continue something uncomfortable.
