The next chapter in the book, Becoming the Obvious Choice, the authors discuss the subject of clutter or unclutter.
When we are surrounded with piles of stuff, most of the time it’s junk, we tend to be a little scattered in our thinking and the way we process things.
When you see someone who has piles of stuff or a clutter desk, you will generally find someone who has the same thing going on in their minds.
When you have a desk that is clear of everything except for what you are working on, you tend to be more focused on the task at hand. You tend to have more control.
Here are a few points to consider when un-cluttering yourself:
1. Take time to track your time. Where does your time go? Take a two week period and log all your activity. You will be surprised at some of the things you will find. You will probably find about two hours of productive time a day.
2. Group “like” tasks together. For example, do all your phone calls in one sitting. Answer all your emails at one time during the day. You do not have to constantly check your email, do it at one time during the day, if there is an emergency, your phone will ring.
3. At the end of the day, clear your desk, make your to do list for tomorrow and GO HOME leaving your work behind you.
