Defining Success on YOUR Own Terms

Success is one of those things, that when you think about it, is a very vague concept.

So in order to know whether you are successfully living your life, you need to define it for yourself.

Earl Nightingale defined success as, “The progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.”

I think that is a wonderful definition of success. Basically his definition says that as long as you are making forward progress towards a WORTHY goal or ideal.

I would probably take this one step forward, “The progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal that is important to YOU.”

When you are working on goals that you define for yourself based on your own desires, than you will be truly moving forward towards a successful life.

A lot of people would think that this may be a selfish statement if you are only working on things that are important to you. But the fact is in the end, you will be the only one that will be held responsible for your life and the fruits that came out of you using your own unique talents to serve others.

Remember, we need others to succeed. But we need them to serve them. Once we become in tune with their desires and start to find ways to profitably serve their desires, we are starting to move in a whole new direction. And if we find a way to keep our minds focused on serving others we will truly be living a life that will be successful.

My mentor, Jim Rohn, uses an analogy of when you are on a plane and the stewardess is going over the procedure for the air masks, and he makes the point that you need to put YOUR mask on first before you start to help others with their mask.

When you are living a life of success based on your own terms, you are certainly putting your mask on first.

Just a word of caution here…

Living successfully is NOT…

1. Blaming others for your unhappiness.

2. Blaming circumstances for your unhappiness.

3. Waiting for others to change for you to be happy.

4. Waiting for circumstances to change for you to happy.

Success is living your life the way you want to live it, while profitably serving others.
