Living successfully requires due diligence with respect to keeping your mind from being littered with the garbage that keeps you from concentrating on your goals and objectives.
This garbage can come from many sources, including:
1. TV, Radio and the Internet – These are probably the most pervasive in our society. I can give you any news cast in a nutshell, someone’s house burned down, someone got killed, someone got taken advantage of by a business, there was a robbery and the weather is going to rain or partly sunny.
The three medias listed above are driven by one thing and that is advertising dollars. The only way they can keep you at the edge of your seats is by causing you to feel better about yourself by someone else’s problem. It’s that simple. And when they have you emotionally involved with the bad news, they hit you with a commercial. It’s a form of brain washing and we are susceptible to it.
The solution: Turn off all forms of electronic media. The Internet can be used to access sites like this one and others that look to help combat the negative input by all these medias.
2. Negative Coworkers and relatives – Did you ever notice that the person who is offering you financial advise is the one always looking to borrow a couple of bucks for cigarettes? This is a little touchier subject because these are people you come in contact with everyday and on the holidays.
This is where you have to limit contact and conversation.
At work, get so involved with your work that you don’t have time for negative people that work with you. And if you have to converse if it starts to get negative, then change the subject quickly or simply walk away.
At the holidays with family, simply use the same process, get around the more positive people and if the conversation gets negative, then change the subject quickly or simply walk away.
I think I heard Zig Ziglar give this analogy, “What would you do if someone came into your living room and dumped garbage all over your floor? You would probably get mad as hell. So why is it that we let people dump garbage in our minds?”
