Success and Working in Your Circle of Influence

In Stephen Covey’s great book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective people, he spends a whole chapter on the circle of concern and the circle of influence. It’s my opinion he could have written the whole book about these two circles.

The circle of concern contains everything that is out of your control. These things can include the government, the weather, your next door neighbor or your family.

These are things that if you base your happiness on the actions of the people in this group you will be sorrily unhappy all your life. Living your life basing your happiness on the things in your circle of concern leads to a life of blaming and complaining.

And on top of that if you do receive your happiness from anything in your circle of concern, it can be taken away as fast as you receive it. And the you will have no control over it.

Living a successful life requires that you live in your circle of influence. Your circle of influence is the circle that you have complete control over.

These things include:

1. Your Attitude – You can control your attitude no matter what is happening around you. You choose to be positive or negative. The choice about how you view things is always in your control.

2. The use of your time – How you use your time is always at your discretion. Are you using your time wisely? Are you using your time on the most productive thing possible at this moment? Or are you spending your time do unproductive activities? The funny thing about time is that time is a very perishable item. Your not getting anymore time. Once it is gone it is gone forever. My mentor Jim Rohn says, “Time is more valuable than money. You can always get more money but you can’t get more time.”

3. What you focus on – You choose what you focus on. You can focus on activities that create more value for you and those around you or you can focus on the things that you have no control over and stew about that. What you focus on expands. If you are focus on the bad things around you, this will expand but if you are grateful about the opportunities you have at your disposal you will always have more opportunity.

When you start to focus on the things you have control over your life will change in ways that you couldn’t possibly imagine. This can become a habit way of living.

The way you habitually think and act will create success or failure in you life and when you start to take control of your actions and thinking your life changes.
