Success and Your Self Image

Zig Ziglar, one of the greatest motivational speakers of all time, says “You’ve got BE before you can DO, and you’ve got to DO before you can have.”

I’ve always liked that statement. It’s a statement about your self image. Let me explain…

BE – Before you can have anything you desire, you have to have the picture set in your mind with absolute clarity. Now this can apply to your financial situation, your career, your relationships or your fitness level. This is where it all begins.

DO – This is the action that is required to attain the picture you have set in your mind. If your actions are congruent with that picture, you will inevitably reach that goal. If you your goal is to weight 140 pounds and you weight 160 pounds. You have to first set the concrete picture of yourself being 140 pounds then your actions have to be congruent with that picture.

To have the new picture but staying with the old actions is basically… insane!

There is a lot of stuff you will find on the internet that says all you have to do is repeat what you want over and over again and you will eventually get it. This would be called an affirmation but as my mentor Jim Rohn would say “Affirmation without action is self delusion.”

HAVE – This is the attainment of that picture. The key here is have a new goal set for this area before you reach this point. That would help with the bounce back.

It has happened to me on several occasions. I lost weight I got down to my ideal weight but six months later, like magic, the weight was back. I failed to set a backup fitness goal. It could have been for body fat percentage or to run a marathon or a biking event.

So be careful here. You need to have a new goal set prior to reaching the first one to keep you on focus.

As always, Here’s to Your LifetoSuccess,
