Consultants who work for building up efficient teams generally but distinctly apply the theory of having fun while working in a team. They work in a three step process:
• As a Consultant: establishes, assesses and maintains interaction with client and plans programs as well as serves as a secret-keeper for the client.
• As a Trainer: sets the form of the training and after that sets up conferences in which the whole group participates and orchestrates their working.
• As a Facilitator: leads the clients to examine their controversies, disputes and obstacles in understanding each other. This enables better clarity of interaction of the employees and hence helps in working together efficiently.
All of these roles are dependant one on the other so the failure of one will obviously effect the working of the other. Therefore the consultant has to be aware at all times of the success of each step.
But that does not mean that any consultant can help you out in organizing your team. The consultant will have to know exactly how to motivate the team to perform best. It is better option for the employer to take the team to any other consultant if the present or previous consultant is unable to solve the problem. It should be understood and no misunderstanding kept between the consultant and the client. Before trying this out it is important for the employer to discuss in general about the accumulative goals of the team and then take them to a consultant. The consultant too, on his part, should be well informed and well instructed as to the aims of the team and the way in which the client would want to follow up the consultancy programme.
The capability of any such team consultant is put to test only when during the programming session evidence of inter behavioral obstacles arise. Three ways in which the consultant can tackle the situation determines his capacity. The following are the three ways:
1. Choosing to work the way he has already been working on the already defined aims.
2. Choosing to follow up the situation that has arisen and go in an entirely different direction than what is mentioned in the pre-defined objectives.
3. Choosing to mould the two situations idealistically for a maximum gain without diverging from the course of the fixed objectives.
It is always good to know more about your consultant. So before you go into any deal with him make sure that he has handled such situations previously and has enough expertise in that area of work. If your consultant is capable enough then he will surely give you a guarantee that will be in the form of a written document stating what will be achieved after the team has finished their training session. So pick the right consultant who will be able to move effortlessly among his three roles and manage your team for your better.
