One of the biggest problems that face people today (and my guess is for all of human history) is financial problems. The reason we find ourselves in financial difficulties is that we have not mastered delayed satisfaction.
We want our “stuff” and we want it NOW!!!!
As a people, we have made it a habit to spend everything we make and a little more on credit. This is evident in the state that we find our country and our world in as well.
One of the other diseases that plague us in this area is “the something for nothing” syndrome. We have the lottery mentality. We head to the stores and buy the lottery tickets and we go to the casino and put our money in the slot machines.
We expect our government to save us from ourselves with social security, socialized medicine and unemployment insurance.
When we are weak financially, we severely limit our opportunities and our ability to help others.
With little or no money, we are limited to our time and energy to help others but when we have EXTRA money, we can put that money to work in the lives others by investing (creating jobs for others) and charitable giving (helping those that are less fortunate or those who can not help themselves).
When we start to work a savings plan and “pay ourselves first”, we start to build equity that we can use to help others.
We also open up doors of opportunity. When we have money in the bank, it is easier to move from that job we hate to a job that may better use our God-given talents which leads to life satisfaction.
It also provides a cushion in case something unforeseen happens in our lives such as job loss, death in the family or any other number of unfortunate events that life throws at us.
Not only that but it is Biblically asked of us to properly manage our finances because of everything that is mentioned above.
What would our communities look like if every member of a local church was tithing 10% of their gross income?
I would suggest that we wouldn’t need a government to come in to be the savior of our problems.
