Well 2009 is on us, and if you are like me you have list of yearly goals a mile long and you are pumped to get moving on them, if you aren’t already.
The one thing that I have found to have held me back from reaching some of my goals in the past has been…
MY HABITS!
I can link my failure to reach a particular goal to some habitual way that I have been thinking or acting and most of the times it has been a combination of both.
The fact is that we are programmed with habits that we have picked up from when we were kids. And we have certain patterns of thinking and acting that we may not even be aware of.
Habit Control is one of the single most important habits we can form.
Some of the steps necessary for taking control of our habits are:
1. Desire – Desire is the starting point to every successful endeavor. Make your desire specific in every detail.
2. What are you going to give in return for what you desire? – What service are you going to profitably provide in return for what you desire.
3. Identify the actions and thoughts that need to change in order to move you towards your desire – What different thoughts and action do you need to take in order to get where you want to be?
4. Look for patterns that seem to repeat themselves in your life – When you can start to identify these patterns, you can start to replace the habitual actions and thinking that are causing these patterns to occur.
Becoming a master of your habits is one of the things that can change your life forever. But until you make the necessary changes in the way you handle these habits, you can waste a lot of time repeating the patterns you want to change.
