What is a low-calorie diet? The term generally describes an eating plan that reduces energy intake. The amount that is appropriate depends on your health, activity and needs, so a target from someone else’s plan may not fit you.
Start with your current routine
Notice the meals, snacks and drinks that make up your usual week. Choose a realistic place to make a change, such as planning portions or replacing a drink you don’t especially enjoy.
Keep nutrition in the plan
Build meals with foods you enjoy and consider how they supply protein, fiber and other nutrients. A registered dietitian can help you adapt a plan to your preferences, budget and health needs.
Review how it’s working
Consider hunger, energy, schedule and ability to maintain the changes. If a diet is very restrictive or you take medication affected by food intake, discuss changes with your healthcare team.
